The scientific programme will be arranged by staff members of the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM). Technical ICBM staff will assist in the practical work.

Dr. Thomas Badewien

... is a physical oceanographer in the Marine Sensor Systems Group at ICBM. He joined ICBM as scientist in the DFG-Research Group on “BioGeoChemistry of Tidal Flats” in 2004. Since 2009, he is scientifically and technically responsible for running the time series station near Spiekeroog, and is also a lecturer at the Jade University of Applied Sciences. Prof. Dr. Bernd Blasius

...is head of the ICBM group “Mathematical Modelling" since 2007. His fields of expertise are theoretical ecology, mathematical modelling, complex systems. He is doing research on integrative ecosystem models, bioinvasion and epidemic spread in complex networks and stability and dynamics of ecological communities models of species richness and biodiversity.

Dr. Christof Feenders

...is staff member of the Mathematical Modeling group at ICBM since 2010. After his PhD studies in Neuroinformatics at University of St Andrews, Scotland, he was Post-Doc at Newcastle University, England. His research interests are complex network analysis, network inference, machine learning, and multidimensional data analysis.

Prof. Dr. Ulrike Feudel

...is head of the Theoretical Physics/Complex Systems Group at ICBM since 2000. After her doctorate at Humboldt University in Berlin, she held positions as senior scientist at Academy of Sciences of GDR and a Max-Planck Group at University of Potsdam (habilitation in 1996), and was awarded with a Heisenberg Fellowship. She has a large variety of research interests including particular dynamics in flows, extrem events, harmful algal blooms, wind power plants optimization, plankton ecology, and population models.

PD Dr. Holger Freund

...is a Quaternary geologist and geobotanist and leader of the Geoecology Group at ICBM since 2004. Before, he held several positions at the Geological Survey of Lower Saxony and the Universities of Hannover and Rostock. His work experience and research interests are in the fields of geoecology, as well as paleoclimatology and -ecology of the coastal Holocene with special emphasis on landscape development at different spatial and temporal scales.

PD Dr. Jan Freund

...studied Physics at the RWTH Aachen and finished his PhD at the Humboldt-University Berlin in 1996. After his habilitation in theoretical physics on “Noise-induced phase synchronization” in 2003, he joined the Theoretical Physics/Complex Systems Group at ICBM as senior researcher. His expertise is in mathematical modelling of ecosystem dynamics, stochastic dynamics, time series analysis, and information theory to marine research questions. He is coordinator of the ICBM Summer School 2017.

Prof. Dr. Helmut Hillebrand

...is head of the ICBM Planktology Group since 2008. After his habilitation in Uppsala (Sweden) he held university professorships in Kiel and Köln. His expertise is in ecological and nutrient stoichiometry, regulation and consequences of diversity, consumer-prey interactions, composition and complexity of food webs, diversity loss in trophic interactions, ecosystem multifunctionality, andmeta-analyses. He is director-elect of the recently approved Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity in Oldenburg (foundation in early 2017) and is listed as „Highly Cited Researcher“ by Clarivate Analytics.

Dr. Birte Junge

...is the executive manager and scientific coordinator of ICBM. She studied biology and earth sciences and worked at the Geological Survey of Lower Saxony, Hannover. After finishing her PhD thesis on tropical soils, she was a Post Doc at the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture in Ibadan (Nigeria) and worked on soil degradation and soil conservation. Before she joined ICBM in 2010, she worked as an international project manager at the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, Hannover.

Dr. Jürgen Köster

...is organic geochemist and geologist and joined ICBM in 1998. He worked in several large research projects, e.g. in the Research Group on “BioGeoChemistry of Tidal Flats”. His research interests are organic, molecular and isotope geochemistry, algal and bacterial lipids, sedimentology and diagenesis of organic matter, and geochemistry of fossil fuels. He was one of the organisers of the previous ICBM summer schools and is coordinator of the summer school is 2017.

Dr. Cora Kohlmeier

Dr. Cora Kohlmeier

...is a staff scientist in the Mathematical Modelling group at ICBM since 2007. She studied mathematics and physics in Oldenburg and worked on the EU Marine Science and Technology Project ERSEM (1990-1996). She joined the DFG research group BioGeoChemistry of the Wadden Sea in 2001, developed a complex ecosystem model for the Wadden Sea and received her doctorate in 2004. Her fields of expertise are mathematical modelling of biological systems and didactics of mathematical modelling. Her research interests focus on conceptual ecological models and budgeting of nutrient dynamics with complex ecosystem models.

Dr. Karsten Lettmann

...is member of the Physical Oceanography group since 2007 and specialized in numerical modelling in physical oceanography, biogeochemical modelling in marine sediments, sediment dynamics in coastal regions, and groundwater modelling. He received his doctoral degree from University of Bremen and worked as scientist at Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (Bremen) and Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar Research (Bremerhaven).

Dr. Aleksandra M. Lewandowska

...is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Planktology. .She holds a M.Sc. Eng. degree in environmental protection (SGGW, Warshaw, Poland) and a PhD from University of Kiel (Germany). Before joining ICBM in 2014, she was at Postdoc at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research (Kiel, Germany) and Synthesis Centre for Biodiversity Sciences (sDiv) in Leipzig (Germany). Her research focus is on the impact of climate change on marine pelagic food webs. Her fields of expertise are a.o. phytoplankton bloom dynamics, experimental ecology, structural equation models, and meta-analyses.

Dr. Alexey Ryabov

...is Postdoc of Virtual Helmholtz-Institute PolarTime at ICBM. He received his Ph.D. in Nonlinear Dynamics from Moscow State University (Russia). He held Postdoc positions in Moscow and at University of Potdam (Germany) before he joined ICBM in 2013. His fields of expertise are a.o. ecological systems modeling, phytoplankton dynamics, biodiversity - ecosystem functioning relationship, and non-linear dynamical systems.

Dr. Jan Schulz

...senior scientist in the Marine Sensor Systems group at ICBM since 2011. After his PhD (University of Bremen, Germany), he developed and applied optical sensor systems at Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research and was lecturer at the University of Applied Science in Bremerhaven (Germany). He is expert in imaging systems, optical sensors, image analysis, data analysis, and marine plankton analyses.

Prof. Dr. Emil Stanev

...is leading the Coastal Oceanography group at ICBM and is head of Department for Data Analysis and Data Assimilation at Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht. His research interests are the theoretical description, quantification and forecasting of physical and biogeochemical processes in regional seas and between continental slope and coast. He is expert in numerical modelling of shelf and semi-enclosed seas, water cycles and water mass formation, biogeochemical modelling, sediment dynamics, air-sea exchange, and atmospheric studies.

Prof. Dr. Jörg Olaf Wolff

...is a professor for Physical Oceanography (theory and numeric modelling) at ICBM since 1999. He graduated at the University of Hamburg (1991), and was a research scientist at Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (Hamburg) and the Co-operative Research Centre for the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Environment at University of Tasmania (Hobart, Australia). His fields of expertise are geophysical fluid dynamics, atmosphere/ocean interaction, ocean circulation theory and numerical modelling, climate physics, and coastal hydro- and sediment dynamics. He is chief editor of “Ocean Dynamics” and Adjunct Professor at University of Southern Queensland, Australia.

Prof. Dr. Oliver Zielinski

...is professor for Marine Sensor Systems at ICBM since 2011. Before, he held leading positions in marine sensor systems industry and a professorship at the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. His fields of expertise include marine environmental and biogeochemical sensors, marine optics and physics, and autonomous long-term sensor systems and observatories, and citizen science. His research focusses on new sensor developments for observations in the marine environment and of potential hazards.
