The General and Molecular Microbiology Group
investigates the molecular physiology of (marine) environmental bacteria. Main research interests involve elucidation of novel metabolic pathways, reconstruction of metabolic networks, identification of biocatalysts driving marine biogeochemical cycles and investigation of molecular mechanisms for the adaptation to changing environmental conditions (e.g. nutrient gradients and shifts).
The group employs an innovative-integrative approach by combining classical physiology (e.g. anaerobic cultivation and chemostats) with organic chemical analysis of metabolites and modern methods of proteogenomic research (e.g. 2D DIGE for quantitative assessment of context-specific protein signatures).
