Extreme Events and Pattern Switching on Complex Networks of Excitable Units
Gerrit Ansmann (University of Bonn) Complex Networks

Events that are rare in time and at which an observable of a system is extreme in amplitude can have a strong impact on our world, society, and individual lives. It is therefore desirable to understand, predict, and possibly even control them. Many of these events occur in systems that can be described as extended excitable systems, e.g., harmful algal blooms, epidemics, and epileptic seizures. In order to investigate possible general generating mechanisms of such events, we study deterministic networks of paradigmatic excitable units. We demonstrate that these networks are capable of generating such extreme events without the influence of noise, a change of control parameters, or an input to the system.

Moreover we find that some of the studied systems are capable of switching between three dynamical patterns, one of which are extreme events. This pattern switching is of interest as a model for natural phenomena such as the transition of the human brain between physiological states (e.g., different stages of sleep) and pathophysiological states (e.g., epileptic seizures or migraine attacks).

We discuss the properties and mechanisms of the aforementioned phenomena.
