1. Preliminary Remark

This guideline is to make clear for students and teachers the requirements of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) in the study course Marine Environmental Sciences.

For more general information about the ECTS-programme, please check http://www.admin.uni-oldenburg.de/aaa/de/ects/index.htm

The following ECTS-regulations expressly do not affect the Diplom-Prüfungsordnung (diploma examination rules of the study course Marine Environmental Sciences.

2. For what kind of students is ECTS important?

Above all, participation in ECTS is important for all students coming from foreign universities to Oldenburg. For them, it is absolutely essential that they study according to ECTS-rules. For some students of Marine Environmental Sciences, studies according to ECTS are recommended: students planning to complete their studies abroad and not in the study course Muwi should have their ECTS-credits documented from the very beginning of their studies. However, on the one hand, for students and staff, extra requirements and rules have to be met which means that this step has to be considered carefully, on the other hand, it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to get ECTS-credits with hindsight. For students of Marine Environmental Sciences, planning a stay in a foreign country but wishing to complete their studies with a MUWI-examination (examination in Marine Environmental Sciences) there is no need to participate in ECTS. In these cases, ECTS does not have any advantages but causes more paperwork.

3. Which staff take part in ECTS? Basically, all staff of the study course participate in ECTS.

However, responsible for the organisation and certification of credits is the coordinator of the respective module. He or she decides, in cooperation with the staff of the module, on type and extent of the assessment as specified in the ECTS handbook.

4. What are the Requirements for an ECTS Certification?

Students interested in ECTS (see 2.) need an ECTS-certification for each attended module, course or credit earning activity. This demands an examination and evaluation of the achievements, sometimes additionally to the work normally demanded in the course.

5. How do You Apply for a Module? Normally, at the beginning of a class, ECTS-students, supply an informal, written ECTS - application to the coordinator. Contents and organizational aspects as well as details of credit earning should be discussed. The coordinator will then inform all teachers about the student's ECTS-registration. The application can be repeated.

6. ECTS and Credit Evaluation

The coordinator and the teachers are responsible for the evaluation of achievements gained in a module. The evaluation may only refer to contents of the module and must be in accordance with the achievements of all participating students. Credits can be assigned for different types of work as for example: · protocol · home work / term paper · report with written documentation · essay / case study · oral examination by two teachers (max. 20 min) · objects / products (experiments, software program, etc.) It is possible that several students cooperate, however, partial performances have to be clear and evaluable. Generally, details of the assessment of the modules will be explained at enrolment by the coordinator. Directly after completion of the assessment, the teachers of the module taking part in this process, will inform the coordinator about the achieved results. On the basis of the individual results achieved in a module, he or she will award a grade reflecting the quality of the total work load. If all individual classes of a module have successfully been studied, i.e. there is no grade less than "E" (compare 7.) the ECTS-student will be given an ECTS-certificate. (enclosure "ECTS certification").

7. The Grades

The quality of a student's academic work is reflected in the grade. In order to ensure a comparability of the grading in different countries, ECTS uses letter grades (A-F) recommended by the European Commission as follows:

A hervorragend / excellent
ausgezeichnete Leistung und nur wenige Fehler
outstanding performance with only minor errors
B sehr gut / very good
  Überdurchschnittliche Leistung aber einige Fehler
above average standard but with some minor errors
C gut / good
insgesamt solide Leistung jedoch mit einigen grundlegenden Fehlern
generally sound work with a number of notable errors
D befriedigend / satisfactory
mittelmäßig mit deutlichen Mängeln fair but with significant shortcomings
E ausreichend / sufficient
  Leistung, die den Mindestanforderungen genügt
performance meets the minimum criteria
FX mangelhaft / fail
einige Verbesserungen sind erforderlich, bevor die Leistungen anerkannt werden können
some more work required before the credit can be awarded
F ungenügend / fail
  erhebliche Verbesserungen sind erforderlich
considerable further work is required
